An excerpt from the Repair + publication :

Cool iron

“The iron has been preserved in the same condition as at the time his mother gave it to him before she died. Izz does not know how old it is. He is unsure if it is broken. He has never looked inside. All he knows is that it was passed down from his grandmother to his mother, who did most of the ironing for all her family. His mother passed the iron on to him because he was curious about it, but did not have the chance to demonstrate how it worked. Izz has bittersweet memories of living with his mother after a difficult divorce, conversing with her into the early hours of the morning, fulfilling her late night food cravings of ikan pari bakar (grilled stingray) and epok epok (curry puff), playing loud music at night, and visiting her in hospital. He lives with his stepfather and has not kept in contact with the rest of his family. He might want to pass the iron on to his children, while it stays on the shelf, watching them grow up.”
