An excerpt from the Repair + publication :

The T-Shirt is Not Worn Out

“Valentine received this T-shirt 14 years ago as a gift from her friend and mentor - a polytechnic lecturer who had bought two of the same T-shirt, one for each of them. The words on it "You Are Born To Be Amazing" encouraged her at a time when she had just gotten off to a stressful start as a preschool teacher. She felt unable to turn to anyone for advice as everyone else had just told her that she would get over it eventually. Valentine resorted to contacting her lecturer, turning up at her home after work, and was pleasantly surprised to have been invited in, given the time to vent her frustration, and have her concerns acknowledged. Over the years, she has gained confidence in her job, and their relationship has evolved from mentorship to friendship. Valentine's mother saw how tattered the T-shirt had become over the 14 years and was going to use it as a rag, but then realised how cherished it was and helped to mend the tears. Valentine knows that the T-shirt is not particularly expensive or rare, but values it because her friend had thought of her when choosing the message.”
